STUDENTS’ SAFE DRIVING MESSAGES CAN STEER THEM TO $15,000 AVAILABLE IN SPRING “CREATE REAL IMPACT CONTEST”

There’s a great opportunity for educators who know of a budding artist, musician, writer or filmmaker. Impact Teen Drivers and California Casualty are once again challenging students to develop artistic ideas to combat reckless and distracted driving. Their creative solutions could net them part of $15,000 in educational grants available in the 2020 Spring Create Real Impact contest.

The 2020 Spring Create Real Impact Contest will provide $1,500 grand prizes in the following categories:

  • Video
  • Music
  • Art
  • Creative writing
  • Spanish Language
  • Sports team video

There will also be awards for the works receiving the most online votes.

Administrators, teachers and education support professionals are urged to motivate students to enter the contest. Three schools with the most entries will each be awarded a $1,000 educational grant.

Students, ages 14-22, can enter their works at www.createrealimpact.com.

The Create Real Impact contest was initiated in 2009 as a proactive solution to the deadly epidemic of inattentive driving by teens. Research shows distraction is a key factor in almost 60 percent of crashes involving drivers ages 16 to 19. Empowering messages from young people urging their peers to adopt safer driving attitudes and avoid the tragic result of bad choices behind-the-wheel can save lives.

“I have confidence teens can change the culture of driving to one that is distraction free – much like earlier generations did with seat belts,” said Kelly Browning, Ph.D., Executive Director, Impact Teen Drivers. “The Create Real Impact Contest provides an opportunity for teens to join the conversation and do something about the problem.”

Students across the nation, aged 14-22, can enter and find motivation from past winners at www.createrealimpact.com. The deadline for submissions is March 19 at 6 p.m. (PDT).

Online voting will take place March 20-26, with judges determining grand prize awards and notifying winners around April 1, in conjunction with National Distracted Driving Awareness Month.

Educators wanting to bring the powerful Impact Teen Drivers curriculum to their schools can visit www.impactteendrivers.org or email info@impactteendrivers.org.

California Casualty has been serving the needs of educators since 1951 and is the only auto and home insurance company to earn the trust and endorsement of the NEA. As a result, NEA members qualify for exceptional rates, deductibles waived for vandalism or collisions to your vehicle parked at school, holiday or summer skip payment plans and free Identity Defense protection – exclusive benefits not available to the general public. IEA MEMBERS HELP IEA WIN MEMBER BENEFIT PRIZE

In the September 2019 issue of this newsletter a story was run that encouraged IEA members to enter the IEA into a contest in a competition for new member registrations on the NEA Member Benefits website. Two things happened:

(1) Our members read that story.

(2) Apparently a lot of our members entered the IEA into the contest by registering on the site.

The results:

The IEA affiliate is one of the top nine State Education Associations (ranked number 7 of the 51 state affiliates) with the most new NEAMB.com website registrations.  As the seventh place finisher, the IEA has won 25 vouchers for premium in SAVI (Student Loan Forgiveness Navigator).

SAVI, an online student loan evaluation tool, allows you to determine your repayment options, and shows you what your potential savings could be for FREE. The average user finds over $1,500/year in savings.

Once you see your options, you can choose to apply for the programs, (like premium) which includes an e-filing service and 1-on-1 support from student loan experts for $29.95. These 25 vouchers will allow 25 teachers to receive premium for FREE!

The dispersal of these 25 vouchers is yet to be determined.  Thanks to all of you who registered!  Twenty-five IEA members who are carrying student loan debt will be happy.
